DEGREE PROGRAMS
The two primary Ithra degrees are Lector Artis (Reader in Arts) and Lector Scientae (Reader in Sciences). Degrees are granted after 70 credit hours of classes (generally speaking, one hour of class equals one credit hour). All students, regardless of their degree focus, are required to take certain classes in order to graduate.
All grades are pass/fail, as determined by the instructor. Anyone who signs up for but does not attend a class is a "no-show" and no grade is given. You will be notified if you fail a class. Any appeal to a failing grade must be made to the Board of Proctors.
All students pursuing degrees are required to take the following courses:
General Requirements (all students)Survey of the Middle Ages
Chivalry and Etiquette
Introduction to the SCA
Games and Pastimes
Marshaling and Fighting Appreciation
Basic Dance
Basic Heraldry
Costume History
Basic Calligraphy
Additional requirements for a Lector Artis degree:Survey of Medieval Arts
Survey of Medieval Needlework
Medieval Life and Customs
Graphic Heraldry
Dance
Additional requirements for a Lector Scientae degree:Survey of Medieval Sciences
Medieval Encampments
Castles and Fortifications
Field Heraldry
History of Arms and Armor
Medieval Architecture
Any class that is not one of the above is an elective. Students must devote at least eight credit hours outside of their main area of interest (arts or sciences). Students wishing to pursue both L.A. and L.S. degrees only need to take the General Requirements once.
Students may repeat courses if they wish but will only get credit for it once regardless of who teaches it.
Teaching Tips
TEACHING TIPS FOR INSTRUCTORS - Mistress Arlys o Gordon
If you are thinking about becoming an Ithra teacher, thank you! Please
contact the Chancellors in whose campuses you would like to offer your
class or classes.
Here are some tips to help you with your class.
1) Write informative handouts. Outlines may help students follow the
material but rarely provide the information they desire. Make sure your
pages are in order, your copy is clean, and the handout is accessible,
organized, and logical. When you write handout, ask yourself how you
would like something presented to you if you were encountering it for the
first time.
2) If you are teaching a craft, explain the craft, materials, and methods
in the handout. Use illustrations and graphs which are clear and easy to
understand and follow. Give good source list information. Provide
generous materials, and do the craft along with the students. Students
will be less intimidated if you give them plenty of room to make
mistakes. Plan materials intended for beginners if you are teaching a
beginning class.
3) Bring extra supplies, just in case. Just because the catalog told
students to bring supplies does not mean they will all remember.
4) If you are teaching something lecture oriented, particularly if it
uses sound or slides or other sorts of audio visual (not necessarily
mechanical) aids, be sure your handout follows the order of your
presentation so students can follow along. If you have samples of things
you can pass around, do so at the appropriate times. Show-and-tell is fun
and informative.
5) If your class allows for student involvement, open the class up for
this as much as it is possible. For example, allow lots of question and
answer time on a class designed for newcomers. Open an esoteric subject
up for discussion. This helps students get involved with the material on
their own terms and helps them process the information. Let students be
active participants whenever possible.
6) Students like teachers who are receptive to them. Listen patiently to
their questions, allow them to finish and explain their reasoning without
rushing ahead.
7) Plan time for questions and discussion even if yours is a lecture
class. Don't rush through your material. Practice it at home and time it.
As you work through your class, ask yourself questions about the subject
and incorporate these into your materials.
8) Whenever possible, bring your students into close physical proximity
with you and with each other. This helps improve communication. In
addition, it allows students to see what others are doing, and helps them
to function as a group.
9) Lastly, be on time for your class. It is disturbing to students when
teachers are late, and it is hard on the teachers too as it forces them
to rush. Be there early, get set up as much as you can, and go in rested
and prepared. Remember, the Chancellor and staff are there to help you!
